OOC PERMISSIONS

I'm fully comfortable with Backtagging, Threadhopping and Fourthwalling! I don't have any particular triggers, but I won't hesitate to speak up if something starts to become too discomforting.

IC PERMISSIONS

Physical Affection: A fantastic way to get yourself tripped up or otherwise 'parried', but I have no actual qualms with attempts being made!
Flirting: ...I mean, you're welcome to try? Just remember that Garrett's only true love is theft.
Combat/Injury: Go right ahead, but make sure to give me a clear warning in advance!
Killing: A hard no. I've already heard this guy's deathrattle far too many times in the games...
Mind-Reading: I'm down for it, but please clear it up with me first so I can conjure up appropriately hilarious (or depressing) mental images!

OPT-INS (POCKET-PICKING AND TRUE SIGHT)

Garrett absolutely hates the idea of getting rusty, and as such will actively attempt to keep his hand-eye coordination sharp with spontaneous bouts of pocket-picking whenever safe opportunities present themselves. If you would like this young man to have worryingly intimate knowledge of what your character is keeping on their person, feel free to leave a comment to this post detailing what he's managed to find! (Please make sure to specify if you just want Garrett to know what's in their inventory, or if you want him to actively relieve them of an item!)

Garrett is also in possession of a vaguely-defined and rarely-used form of Innate True Sight, allowing him to see through magical illusions without help from outside arcana. Whilst certainly an invaluable tool, its usefulness is often hampered due to it requiring scepticism on Garrett's part in order to actually to function - he can't actually use this power if he's already fooled by what he's seeing.
If you would like Garrett to sense something off about your character's appearance, please feel free to post a comment here describing what's beneath their (metaphorical or literal) veil! Otherwise, Garrett's going to be too far up his own arse to see through any glamours your character may or may not have active, and subsequently won't notice anything.

CANON INFORMATION

CHARACTER NAME: Garrett
CANON: Thief
HISTORY: From lowlife to legend.

STRENGTHS:

Ambitious - Sated but never truly satisfied with his successes, Garrett's aspirations push him towards constant improvement and honing of his craft. Every successful heist is another step towards committing an even bigger heist, every mistake that he makes is another opportunity to better master himself, and every question he cannot answer is another sign that he really needs to go and pilfer the local library at some point in the near future. Garrett's desire to be the absolute best at what he does drives him to do everything in his power to grow, resulting in an incredible dedication to independent learning that has consistently proven advantageous for his allies...and very, very dangerous for his enemies.

Dauntless - Keeping a level head during a heist is an essential skill for any prospective burglar, especially when you're going to be spending a lot of your time squatting in the shadows mere inches away from heavily-armoured guards...but Garrett's own stoic nature goes well beyond that of your average criminal, seeing him trudging through zombie-infested and trap-ridden tombs with hardly a breath out of line.
Up to the canon point he's being taken from, Garrett has skulked through several cursed city districts, headed a one-man expedition through a magma-filled forgotten city, and even been hunted by terrifying undead revenants without losing his cool. Be it mundane or arcane, there is truly little that can truly rattle the young thief's nerves.

Resourceful - When it comes to pure wit and adaptability, few can match Garrett's remarkable talent for committing criminal acts with little to no outside assistance, utilising almost completely mundane means to wholly subvert the sprawling security of highly-guarded estates and crowded public buildings alike. Through a combination of maliciously repurposed Keeper secrets and practical application of low-level magical artifice, the young thief has come to possess quite the veritable set of tools for use in his larcenous acts, along with the knowledge of how to best use them effectively.
Such is the sharpness of his intellect, that he has even enjoyed a multitude of successful tomb-robbing missions, in a world where every sprawling crypt or ancient necropolis is rife with devious traps and undead monstrosities. Who would have thought that one could so easily navigate sprawling catacombs full of necromantic horrors with as little as a quiver full of rope arrows and a pocketful of noisemakers?

FLAWS:

Cynical - Having lived most of his life either in an apathetic orphanage or on poverty-stricken streets, Garrett's opinion of his fellow man is...not very high, to say the least. Operating on the idea that betrayal is an inevitability rather than just a possibility, his capacity for cooperation - let alone forming basic relationships - is painfully lacking. Garrett will only work with or for people who he has an out with (usually some form of blackmail) or are otherwise in a position where betraying him isn't in their best interests.
Daybreak Academy will prove to be very challenging in this regard, as the young thief is generally very keen on avoiding as many interactions with other people as possible, despite the knowledge that he needs to learn how to work together with his peers if he is to have any hope of getting back at Constantine.

Egoistical - As far as he's concerned, Garrett is the very best at what he does, and anybody who says otherwise will rapidly find themselves relieved of their financial security. Strongly driven by an incessant need to be better than any of his so-called peers, it was this ego of his that drove him to abandon The Keepers in search of more lucrative pursuits, especially once it became clear that The Keepers' mission statement wouldn't be lining his pockets.
Unfortunately, pride goeth before a fall, and several years worth of bigger and bigger heists inflated Garrett's overconfidence to dangerous levels...up until some simple flattery and misdirection fooled him into completing Constantine's job without question, the young thief barely escaping the aftermath of his hubris with his life.

Rebellious - To date, every single authority figure within Garrett's life has tried to harm him in some fashion: The orphanage's staff when he was a toddler, the English police force when he was a child, and even his Keeper tutors when he was an adolescent. These combined experiences have left an exceptionally deep-seated anti-authority sentiment within the young thief's psyche, only further intensified by all the dirty laundry his thief work has inevitably unearthed. More than mere cynicism, Garrett considers any of those with the audacity to wear a title of power as not only irrevocably corrupt, but also extremely dangerous and in dire need of some significant financial deprivation.

CANON ABILITIES: Simple, but effective.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Garrett
AGE: 24
GRADE: Undergrad
AU BACKSTORY: Garrett began life as many do - stuffed into a basket and abandoned outside a rundown orphanage in East London before he was old enough to even form cohesive memories. Raised in a generally toxic and unloving environment, it wasn't long before the young boy organised his own great escape from his wretched 'home', going on to then spend several years living out the street urchin dream before the one fateful day where he dared to pickpocket a figure blurred with glamour and illusion. This figure turned out to be a member of an isolationist secret society obsessed with the preservation of lore, known only as The Keepers.
Offering Garrett the opportunity to learn how to put his talents to a far greater use, they took the young boy in as their own, raising him as an acolyte and teaching him their secret doctrines and otherworldly lore. Unfortunately for The Keepers, Garrett's interests laid purely within himself, and the state of the world at large would remain of little interest to him. Thus, at the ripe old age of twenty, Garrett made the decision to vanish from The Keepers' headquarters overnight, alongside an excessive amount of their artefacts and other assorted valuables.
Over the next couple of years, Garrett would hone the skills of his generous benefactors to commit a string of heists across Europe, leaving lavish manors picked clean of their glamour and wealth, with nothing but a trail of unconscious guards left behind as testament to his presence. It would be this impressive history of successes that would fatten Garrett's ego, causing him to be cocky enough to accept a strange commission from a mysterious individual by the name of Constantine, requesting that he steal an ancient artefact from a long-forgotten Keeper vault.
The resulting heist would push Garrett's skills to their limits as challenges both mundane and extraordinary threatened to take his life at every corner, devious deathtraps and undead abominations hellbent on keeping the young thief from his prize. But eventually, superior skill and fortune would prevail, and Garrett would return home with an artefact of legendary proportions in his hands. And for all of his hard work, he was rewarded not with money nor fame, but with a glimpse of Constantine's true Outlandish form as their monstrous claws sought his demise.
Garrett would escape this encounter with merely one eye less for his efforts, only to find himself now burdened with a horrifying portent echoing inside of his mind that foretold of an event known as the Nightfall, now accelerated thanks to his actions. Driven to his wits end by the taunting voices now calling his mind home, he would eventually devise an all-or-nothing plan to get back at Constantine and destroy their dark project before it can reach its devious completion.

And step one of that plan is reaching out to Daybreak Academy.

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Garrett's AU backstory follows almost identically to a modernised variant of his canon backstory, and as such he is essentially the same character. What little divergence he has lies in his ability to interact with others - thanks to the occasional presence of folks like Jailbreak in his criminal life, this particular brand of Garrett is slightly less inclined to refuse the assistance or even companionship of others, and thus will be more likely to instigate social threads or join existing ones. The incident with Constantine will make him arguably more prickly than canon during his first couple of weeks at the academy, but he'll almost certainly mellow out once he's able to get back into his crime-committing groove.

RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: Garrett is a former member of The Keepers, a small sect of Watchers that split from the organisation due to radically conflicting beliefs. The Seers that would go on to form the original Keepers foresaw the Nightfall as their peers did, but rather than seeing such visions as a warning, they chose to interpret them as destiny - one that could not be delayed nor denied. As such, their proposed solution to the Nightfall was to abandon those who would foolishly choose to stand and fight, and instead begin gradually preserving as much of the world's culture and history as possible into Arcane Vaults spread across the globe, buried deep underground and heavily warded against magical detection. Once it became clear that the majority of their fellow peers did not agree with this course of action, these despondent Seers would cut ties with the Watchers proper and form The Keepers, named after their solemn duty to keep the knowledge of the world as it is from the dark forces of the Outlands.

POWERS: On the one hand, Garrett only has one true 'power' of his own, and is otherwise a completely mundane human. On the other hand, said completely mundane human is in possession of over a decade's worth of extensive training and advanced education, of which he as put to use in creating a variety of custom-made gadgets and tools for use in his heists. Some common skills and their associated items include:

  • Keeper Acolyte Training
  • As part of his integration into Keeper ranks, Garrett has undertaken years worth of self-defence training underneath their tutelage, gradually building him up into a proficient practitioner in several martial arts, archery, and swordsmanship disciplines. Good luck seeing any of them in action, though - these various techniques were intended to only ever be used as a last resort, one of the very few pieces of Keeper doctrine that Garrett still abides by to this day.
  • Jack of All Trades
  • Regular access to Keeper masterclasses and a sprawling library of forbidden texts have left Garrett with a remarkable repertoire of knowledge both mundane and arcane alike, leaving him deceptively well-informed in even the more esoteric sides of arcane lore. Unfortunately, said knowledge of the otherworldly does not extend beyond what he's had to learn to complete previous heists - he otherwise knows just enough about most things to get by, but his only true mastery lies in the art of stealth.
  • Master Thief
  • Having been forced to learn how to conceal himself within shadowed corners since his earliest childhood memories, Garrett has spent his entire life working out how to best survive in a world that's out to either capture or kill him, with only bloodied noses and near-death experiences to guide his path. Since being taken in by The Keepers and studying their own methods of advanced stealth and subterfuge, these experiences have only been further honed into a near-unmatched comprehension of how to steal from others and remain undetected whilst doing so. The end result is a mythical figure within the criminal underground with such talent that even those endowed with arcane methods of detection will struggle to catch a glimpse of him, let alone actually catch him.
  • Tinkering and Artifice
  • Otherwise known as the fundamental building blocks of Garrett's criminal repertoire, the young thief is equipped with a veritable Swiss Army knife of criminal implements both mundane and arcane. Whilst he has been known to utilise classic concepts such as flash bombs or sleeping gas mines, the true mark of Garrett's talents lies in his personalised magical arrows: Created via minor arcane infusion between broadhead arrows and elemental crystals, his quiver is often stocked up with projectiles intended for a wide variety of different situations, from creating soft moss that is quiet to walk upon to short-circuiting electrical devices to just blowing things up. Mix in a few mundane arrows capable of producing climbable rope or generating obnoxious amounts of noise, and there's very little the average estate or compound can do to halt Garrett's advance towards his goal.
  • The Silverjack
  • The Silverjack is a particularly standout item in the master thief's tool belt - being the only part of his inventory that isn't truly his, instead received as a Christmas gift from a mysterious entity that can only be described as 'Shady Lesbian Santa Claus'. By all appearances resembling a classic blackjack, it is actually built from a unique Lead/Silver alloy designed to overcome lesser magical or otherworldly shields, and contains a potent short-range shock spell that'll quickly render most living creatures unconscious...provided that one strikes the victim 'round the back of the neck, otherwise the spell will fizzle. In addition, The Silverjack is also enchanted with a limiter that prevents it from striking with enough force to kill, rendering it practically harmless no matter how hard it is swung.
  • Innate True Sight
  • With no traceable mage lineage to speak of, the origin of the young thief's 'special eyes' is extremely dubious at best, being practically impossible to prove on their own. According to vague descriptions given by Garrett himself, he experiences a form of double vision when looking at magical illusions or glamours, creating an image half-blurred between what he's 'meant' to see and what is really being concealed. He claims that the more he 'disbelieves' the content of the aforementioned illusion or glamour, the more the concealed image overtakes the false image, eventually causing the fake projection to 'fade out' altogether.
What Garrett doesn't mention, not even to those who claims to trust, is that this 'belief' system is a double-edged sword - should Garrett find himself convinced of the content of an arcane deception, he will be as completely fooled by it as anybody else. As of yet, he has absolutely no plan of sharing this additional titbit with anyone else.
